Initial experimental release for rooted LG webOS TVs using the Flutter Home screen. Tested on an LG C4 with webOS 25 (internal 10.x).
- Rotates cached Bing UHD photos hourly and refreshes the archive daily.
- Proportionally crops photos to fill the Home banner; optional photo descriptions replace its headline.
- Starts after reboot, retains cached photos offline, and works with Glasshouse’s Home layout overlay.
- Includes installation, configuration, removal instructions, and an MIT license.
Validation: 15 automated tests plus live rotation, image geometry, captions, overlay recovery, worker recovery, and TV restart checks. Other TV models and firmware versions remain unverified. The sidebar and app row remain outside the wallpaper, and automatic refresh waits until Home is not foreground.
See the README for installation and TESTING.md for the test scope.

Getting started
From the project's README ("Install"):
On your computer, clone the repository and copy the release files over SSH. Replace TVADDRESS with your TV's address; your SSH connection must already work as root. Nothing needs to run on the computer afterward.
git clone https://github.com/SokolskyNikita/webos-bing-wallpaper.git cd webos-bing-wallpaper git archive --format=tar HEAD | ssh root@TVADDRESS
'mkdir -p /tmp/webos-bing-wallpaper && tar -xf - -C /tmp/webos-bing-wallpaper' ssh root@TVADDRESSThen, in the TV's SSH shell:
cd /tmp/webos-bing-wallpaper sh install.sh --no-start python3 /var/lib/webosbrew/bing-wallpaper/bingwallpaper.py sync python3 /var/lib/webosbrew/bing-wallpaper/bingwallpaper.py apply --refresh /var/lib/webosbrew/init.d/55-bing-wallpaper
--refresh explicitly permits closing and reopening visible Home for a preview. Normal automatic operation waits until Home is not foreground, refreshes only Home in the background, and shows the new image on the next Home visit. It never restarts SAM or a video app. A foreground change during rendering defers the Home restart.
Persistent files live in /var/lib/webosbrew/bing-wallpaper. The executable Homebrew hook init.d/55-bing-wallpaper recreates a runtime systemd unit after each boot. systemd restarts a failed worker after 15 seconds. The service does not wake a sleeping TV. …
Risk and recovery
- Brick risk
- Low
- Requires opening the device
- No
From the project's README ("Recovery and uninstall"):
Network failures leave the previous cache and displayed image intact. Fetch retries are limited to once per 15 minutes. If Glasshouse rebuilds its overlay, the next pass repairs the wallpaper when Home is not foreground. Unexpected third-party asset mounts are rejected.
sh /var/lib/webosbrew/bing-wallpaper/uninstall.sh
This stops automatic startup, restores backed-up banner assets, removes this service's locale mount, and undoes its banner-width edit if that tag has not since been changed by another tool. It does not show or hide the sidebar. It keeps the cache and backups for recovery. If you migrated a previous locale override, re-enable its original boot hook to restore that older customization. Firmware files are never rewritten; image/layout overrides live in a writable overlay and locale overrides use a bind mount.
