Getting started

From the project's README ("Shed"):

English · Español · 简体中文

A jazz ear-training mode for the M-VAVE FM-1 synthesizer, built on top of FM1 Open.

Enter Shed with HOME+SCL and drill functional degrees, chord qualities, melodic and harmonic intervals, dominant tensions, arpeggios, scales/modes, bass movement, melodic dictation and (in Vamp mode) ear rounds, right on the device — no app, no computer. Sessions adapt their difficulty to your streak and use spaced repetition to resurface what you keep missing. Vamp mode loops a chord progression (bass + comping) while you improvise over it, with key-LED guidance and an "ear" round that quizzes you on what's sounding.

See SHEDSPEC.md for the full design: the theory core, the exercise set, vamp mode, the on-device screens and the phase-by-phase build log.

Want to try the exercises without an FM-1 in hand? Shed Web is a browser version carrying over the same theory core and pedagogy — source.

.\tools\Build-Web.ps1 -LocalPreview # build the browser simulator .\tools\Test-Shed.ps1 # run Shed's host test suite

Shed lives entirely under app/shed/, with a 2-line hook into app/screen.c; it does not modify the rest of the firmware. Below is the original FM1 Open README this project is built on.

From the project's README ("Updates and compatibility"):

V13 can update to V14. The workbench supports returning to original V15 and migrating from compatible third-party firmware. The standard FM1 update protocol remains available. Compatibility has been checked with selected firmware versions; it is not a guarantee for every third-party release.

Firmware switching does not make project and sample formats interchangeable. Keep exported backups for rollback. Older firmware may not support V14 track preferences, the independent voice library or synchronized/extended delay settings.

To back up the independent voice library, read and export groups A–D separately. Project files do not contain sample audio. Restore custom samples from their sample bank backup; writing the built-in sample bank replaces the current samples.

The eight sample slots share about 19.55 seconds of new sample storage. Existing larger banks remain readable; they may need to be backed up and reduced before writing the independent DX7 library.
