Free My TV 1.3: the APK now updates itself, your TMDB key goes from your phone to the TV, the picks get posters and your own Plex library, Continue Watching can take the top of the home screen, and more TVs on every platform.
Install
- Google TV and Android TV: download
FreeMyTV.apkbelow and install it withadb install -r FreeMyTV.apk(the README's The ready APK has the steps). It updates the 1.2 APK in place, settings included, and from now on Home Settings → Updates installs the next release, with Android asking first. For the movie and series picks, open Home Settings → TMDB key. If you built Free My TV yourself before, switch back to Original and uninstall it first: the two are signed with different keys. On TCL TVs, run the README'sappopsline again after that uninstall, since it takes TCL's background permission away and the switch can't start without it. - Samsung (2017 and newer): in TizenBrew Installer, Install from GitHub →
simbasjungles/free-my-tv. It takesFreeMyTV-tizen.wgtfrom this release and updates the one you have. On 2015 and 2016 TVs, build it yourself (the README has the steps). - LG (webOS 3 and newer): the webOS Homebrew Channel updates it (repository
https://freemytv.io/webos/apps.json), or installFreeMyTV-webos.ipkthrough Developer Mode (python3 webos/install.py <TV's IP>).
On every TV
- Your TMDB key on the TV. Home Settings → TMDB key: on Google TV and Android TV a QR code opens a page on your phone to paste it (it works once, for 5 minutes, only on your home network); on LG and Samsung you type it. Without a key, the Explore, Movies and Shows tabs stay out of the way. (#333 by @Ugoyo, #336 by @BrunoGiacomazzi)
- Bigger cards, real posters. The focused card widens and the others show posters, up to six picks per tab, and each tab starts at its first pick. (#133 by @AdvaitT17, #362 by @RahulRex0)
- Prices: dollars when Binance halts a currency's pairs (#273 by @donut3226), and euros in Bulgaria (#335 by @viniciusdsandrade). The picks reach TMDB through
api.tmdb.orgwhereapi.themoviedb.orgis blocked (#327).
Google TV and Android TV
- The APK updates itself: once a week it looks for a newer release, and Home Settings → Updates installs it through Android's installer. It only takes this repository's releases, signed with the project's key. (#310 by @halgurdh)
- Continue Watching: Home Settings → Top of the screen picks the recommendations, Continue Watching or the clock. Continue Watching shows what you left half-way, from Android TV's own lists, with its progress, and OK resumes it in its app. (#42 by @ismaelmelgar)
- Picks from: choose which services the picks come from, bring your own Plex library in, and the German services join (ARD, ZDF, ARTE, Joyn, RTL+, WOW, MagentaTV). Watchmode skips channels resold inside another app. (#152 and #135 by @AdvaitT17, #314 by @falcobartsch, #266 by @tscole)
- Now Playing: what any app is playing, in the quotes' place while it plays, on the home screen and the screensaver. (#287 and #301 by @LeoFeitosa)
- On our home screen the remote's Settings button opens the TV's Settings (#289 by @halgurdh). On the screensaver, OK can open the title in its app (#276 by @halgurdh), and
screensaver=falsekeeps the TV's own screensaver (#284 by @EasterwoodBiker). - More TVs: Fire TV's HDMI inputs, Live TV on the antenna and the Appstore in All Apps (#292 by @GiovanniGrillo, #303 by @MLaminekane); Keystone on HY300 projectors (#316 by @fernandoavra); Xiaomi's YouTube and PatchWall buttons in Remote Buttons (#170 by @yudizaxay, #359 by @kshitijcoldplay-blip); on TCL, TCL Channel and its channel source stay on (#352 by @schmidt-gabriel) and the home screen is opaque again (#263 by @werewolfvit); the Hotack X1BR (#342) and Wanbo T2 Ultra (#157) projectors; firmware without the launcherapps service (#337 by @MoazEmad1); OneWorld TV Center's live TV (#296 by @viniciusdsandrade).
- Smoother: lighter drawing on TVs short on memory (#361 by @joaolopest), the home screen keeps its frames while the drawer slides (#306 by @Jailsonmatz), and the click sound plays off the main thread (#347 by @ValdemirBSJr).
- Steadier: the switch rides out TCL's TGuard (#302 by @Jailsonmatz) and checks the inputs safely (#246); the TV's home comes back whenever Google TV's setup app is on (#269); Remote Buttons on TCL's Android 11 leave the volume keys to the TV (#325); the picks and the weather come back as soon as the network does (#320 by @Ugoyo); and Live TV picks the right tuner among inputs of one name (#312).
LG and Samsung
- In Home Settings: pick the weather's city (#328) and see About this TV (#298), both by @BrunoGiacomazzi.
drawer_firstopens the home with the drawer out (#324 by @arnaudaprahamian), and TVs with 1 GB get a light mode (#318 by @aes-pnat). - Samsung: 2015 and 2016 TVs (Tizen 2.3 and 2.4) open their built-in Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video, and show the date in every language (#267 and #268 by @jwcastillo, #353 by @s-geisler, #317). Logos by app name, plus Apple TV, Crunchyroll, Paramount+, Plex and Twitch (#268). Tested on a 2024 TV with Tizen 9 (#282 by @samurato); TV Plus and Gaming Hub stay in the list (#261 by @BrunoGiacomazzi); on 2017 and 2018 TVs the TV's settings stay on the remote's own button (#257).
- LG: the app list through a JS service where the page's origin is refused (#285 by @memekas), and
webos/apps.pyreads the TV's list from your computer on webOS 3 (#211 by @TheSteveRizzo) and over TLS, icons included, on newer TVs (#355 and #357 by @lawrencemq).
26 languages, with Traditional Chinese polished (#297 by @jay900604). For contributors: tools/check.sh checks the CSS too, and translate.py --fill leaves hand translations alone (#278 by @brennanlndz).

Getting started
From the project's README ("Install"):
About ten minutes. You need a Google TV or Android TV (Android 8 or newer) and a computer on the same Wi-Fi. The APK goes on the TV, not on your phone (on a phone, the settings say so and nothing switches).
The easy way: an AI assistant
On the TV, turn on developer mode: Settings → System → About → press Android TV OS build 7 times. Then Settings → System → Developer options → turn on USB debugging. Write down the TV's IP address (Settings → Network & Internet).
On your computer, open an AI coding assistant (Claude Code, Codex or Antigravity) and say: > Install Free My TV (github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv) on my TV at 192.168.1.50. I live in Lisbon.
It downloads the code, installs the tools it needs, builds the app and puts it on your TV, and asks before anything important. Swap in your TV's IP and your city.
On the TV, open Free My TV → Home Screen → Free My TV. That's when the TV asks Allow USB debugging? for Free My TV: tick Always allow and accept.
The ready APK
No tools to install besides adb. The APK on the latest release has no TMDB key: add yours on the TV for the picks (Home Settings → TMDB key, below). It takes your city from the TV's time zone (change it in Home Settings → City).
If you built Free My TV yourself before, switch back to Original and uninstall it first: your build and the release are signed with different keys.
- On the TV, do step 1 above.
- On your computer, download FreeMyTV.apk from the release and install it: …
Risk and recovery
- Brick risk
- Low
- Reversible
- Yes
- Requires opening the device
- No
From the project's README ("What you get"):
- No ads. No sponsored rows, banners or autoplaying promos. Not one.
- Your apps, front and center. The streaming apps you actually use, on a glass shelf. Pick them and their order right on the TV.
- Trending, not sponsored. Three fresh picks every hour (up to six, in Home Settings) from what's trending this week and the latest releases, only from apps you already have, and from the services you choose. The focused one opens wide and the others show their posters. Movies and Shows get their own tabs, and on Google TV your own Plex library can join in.
- Continue Watching (Google TV and Android TV). Home Settings → Top of the screen puts what you left halfway in your apps on top, with its progress, and OK picks it up in its app. Or a big clock, or the picks.
- Your TMDB key from your phone. Home Settings → TMDB key shows a QR code: scan it and paste the key. On LG and Samsung, type it with the remote.
- Weather and markets, one press away. The hour-by-hour forecast (or the next 5 days), sunrise and sunset, and live crypto prices.
- What's playing. Music, a podcast or the radio going on in the background shows on the home screen and the screensaver: the title, the artist and the app, from any app that tells Android what it plays (Home Settings, off until you turn it on). …
