Getting started
From the project's README ("Emulator and firmware loader"):
You can use the following website to test out the firmware in your browser. On Chromium-based browsers, you can connect your FM1 via USB (use one of your main ports, not a USB hub) and load the FM1-GM firmware directly from the website.

From the project's README ("Recovery"):
After two failed starts in a row the firmware comes up in a safe mode with USB on and no audio, so an installer can reach it; PLAY tries the firmware again. After four, it enters the chip's own update mode, the last resort: tools/fm1rescue.py writes the stock firmware back through it (see the script's header and FM-1-transporter).
