ESTAMPIE
It is a groovebox for lively mediæval music: tavern and court dances and celebrations, with plucked lutes and citoles, buzzing hurdy-gurdies, shawms and bagpipes over drones, frame drums, tabors and nakers, chant, and the mediæval modes.

ESTAMPIE 0.3.7: installs with m-bootloader both ways, and helps you out of the Felucca loop.
Install it from the browser at https://fm-1.drewr.dev/estampie/webapp/installer/ (Chrome or Edge), or install the .fwsc with FM1Kit or FM-SWITCH. Try it first in your browser at https://fm-1.drewr.dev/estampie/webapp/emu/.
What's new
- m-bootloader friendly: ESTAMPIE's USB update now takes any well-made package, after Charles Vestal's fix to Felucca's platform (felucca-bsp
afd83ed, MPL-2.0). On an FM-1 with Julius Vitkauskas's m-bootloader, ESTAMPIE installs over it and keeps it, and from ESTAMPIE you can install official V15 (which brings M-VAVE's own bootloader back), M-VAVE's Open V12 and V14, or m-bootloader's own installer. Tested on an FM-1: ESTAMPIE over m-bootloader, V15 from ESTAMPIE, and m-bootloader back on (Open V12 and V14 not yet tried). - Out of the Felucca loop: with m-bootloader installed, firmwares on Felucca's older update code (Felucca, GHOULBOX and ESTAMPIE before 0.3.7, among others) install each other but refuse official V15. Install ESTAMPIE 0.3.7, then return to V15 or install anything else from there. The user guide's new "With m-bootloader" section explains it, and that the recovery menu's wipe erases your projects and samples.
- For developers:
./build.shnow writesbuild/estampie.fwsc(and.bin,.elf), notfelucca.*. - Built from source, and signed, like every release since 0.3.1: check a file with
gh attestation verify estampie-0.3.7.fwsc --repo ocean/estampie --signer-workflow zvenson/fm1-build/.github/workflows/build.yml, or rebuild it and compare withtools/verify_release.sh 0.3.7.
Thank you to Charles Vestal for the update fix, Julius Vitkauskas for m-bootloader, and Leo Kuroshita, Jason Persinger and everyone in the README and CREDITS.md. This is early work. Make a backup before you install.

Getting started
From the project's README ("Building"):
Everything the build needs is fetched into the repository (.toolchain/, .venv/, both git-ignored), so nothing is installed in your home directory. Needs uv, Docker Desktop and git:
tools/setuptoolchain.sh # every tool, pinned by hash (tools/toolchain.lock); Python 3.14 from uv.lock tools/osvscan.sh # known vulnerabilities in everything the build runs (docs/SECURITY.md) ./build.sh # build/estampie.fwsc: the firmware package (Docker runs the JieLi tools on macOS) sh web/emu/build.sh # build/emu/: the browser emulator (zig cc to WebAssembly) python3 -m http.server -d build/emu 8790 # open http://localhost:8790/
Docker Desktop must be running for ./build.sh on macOS.
Risk and recovery
- Brick risk
- Medium
- Reversible
- Yes
- Requires opening the device
- No
From the project's README ("Testing"):
Three levels, cheapest first:
- Browser emulator (web/emu/): the firmware's own C sources compiled to WebAssembly against a simulated FM-1. The quick loop for designing sounds and screens.
- Host tests: tests/runtests.sh (with AC79SDK=.toolchain/ac79-sdk and the venv on PATH): golden renders of every sound, the UI's layout lint, CPU budgets and more. The reverb's HALL cost check fails on Apple silicon hosts (it measures host instructions; CI has no counter and skips it); this is inherited.
- Emulated hardware: tools/hwcheck.sh boots the real build/estampie.fwsc on an emulation of the AC791N's pi32v2 cores and the board (shcherbakov7/m-wave-fm1-browser-emulator, Rust), and saves the screen to build/hw/screen.png. This checks the real image: memory layout, start-up, timing.
Then a real FM-1. M-VAVE's own updater returns it to stock firmware.
