this is the big CPU / dropout release. thanks to @complex_ping, whose research notes for his OVERTONE firmware showed us that on the real unit, DSP cost is mostly memory access, not instruction count.
fixed / new
- Machinedrum + MnM voices' working state moved into the DSP's fast internal memory (it was in slow external memory, which costs far more on hardware than our emulator showed)
- smarter CPU guard: it used to assume the stock engine's own work took a fixed share of each frame. with lots of voices that share grows, and the frame could overrun (the sound cutting out). now it measures it every frame and gives our voices only what's actually left
- DSP load meter: hold FUNC on a PERC or MnM page and the tempo spot shows the DSP load in %. please tell us your numbers!
- FUNC + turn on the custom machines (thanks for the detailed list): pitch jumps by octaves where it should, wave/mode/voice-type style controls step one choice per click, the rest don't move with FUNC. nothing gets stuck anymore
- new safety check on every build: the DSP hardware rules that emulators can't see (from complex_ping's tools), plus a stress test with 16 PERC voices and a heavy MnM mix
test
- hold FUNC on a PERC page with a pattern playing: note the % with a few PERC tracks, then add a MnM track or two
- 8 PERC tracks, dynamic voice allocation, busy pattern: does the sound stay?
- 2-3 heavy MnM tracks together (VO-6, DDRW, DENS): do they hold? VO-6 past one second?
- FUNC + turn: PERC PTCH (octaves), DPRO WAVE's wave (one per click), ONESHOT PLAY MODE (one per click)
known issues
- the fast-memory saving can't be measured in the emulator, so your meter readings are the real test
- MD/MnM tables and P-I delay lines still live in external memory (next, if the meter says they matter)
- +Drive library: no rename/preview/move/create folder yet, one pool for all projects
coming next (not available yet)
- your v0.31/v0.32 reports first: the +Drive library on real units, and the meter numbers
- per-project sample pools, library rename and preview
- cleanup of the retired engines' leftover code

Compatibility
Devices: Elektron Digitone II.
No compatibility information yet.
Getting started
From the project's README ("Install"):
You need a Digitone II on OS 1.11, Chrome or Edge, a USB cable, Elektron Transfer, and your own copies of these Elektron OS files (the patcher asks for them; nothing of Elektron's is published here):
- Digitone II OS 1.11 (the one it patches)
- Digitakt II OS 1.17 (the sample engine's tables)
- Machinedrum UW OS 1.63 (PERC's machines)
- Monomachine SFX-6 OS 1.32B (the Monomachine machines)
Then:
- Back up your projects, presets and samples with Transfer.
- Prove recovery once with stock 1.11 over a DIN MIDI cable (Going back, and recovery). Until this has worked once, flash nothing modified.
- Open the DN2 Mod Patcher, pick a version, give it your OS files. It builds the firmware in your browser (a few minutes) and lets you save it only if it is byte for byte the version that passed the gate.
- Send the saved .syx to the Digitone with Transfer, at low volume, as any OS update.
- Run the regression check (docs/SAFETY.md, about 10 minutes): the stock machines, effects, a pattern, a p-lock, save and reload. Then the version's own tests in FIRMWARE.md.
To send samples: the import tool (Chrome or Edge, USB CONFIG set to USB MIDI or Overbridge, Transfer closed).
Risk and recovery
- Brick risk
- Medium
- Reversible
- Yes
- Requires opening the device
- No
From the project's README ("Going back, and recovery"):
- Back to stock: send Elektron's own DigitoneIIOS1.11.syx with Transfer, as any update.
- If it will not boot: hold [FUNC] while powering on, press [TRIG 4], and send stock 1.11 with Transfer's Legacy OS upgrade mode over a 5-pin DIN MIDI cable to the Digitone's MIDI IN (USB does not work in this mode). It takes about 12 minutes; do not interrupt it. The mod never touches the bootstrap that runs this, and the build tool refuses any file that would.
docs/SAFETY.md lists every way a flash could harm a Digitone II and what stops each one.
